To rival Android, Linux operating systems, Samsung Electronics, the electronic giant has announced its own open mobile operating system called as bada, which means “ocean” in Korean. It is designed for use in Smartphones and will enable rich user experience in various applications. The new operating system will be launched in December this year, when its SDK (Software Development Kit) is planned to be made available. The company predicts that bada-powered devices will become a major thrust in the market in 2010.

Bada operating system

Samsung announced the bada operating system on 10 November, 2009, and the company expects that the first mobile phone based on the operating system will be displayed in the first half of 2010, and will be available to consumers in the second half of 2010. It is reported that the company also plans to introduce a “bada application store.” However, Samsung is already selling Smartphones running on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and Google’s Android operating system.

According to the company, the new bada software will be designed as open source and will compete against Li-Mo Foundation and Android phone platform.

Purpose of bada

Today, consumer wants rich and web connected applications in their devices that are only available in various Smartphones, which are costlier for many. Therefore, Samsung has been developing the new mobile operating system for cheaper devices to make available to everyone.

Samsung is the world’s number two mobile phone maker after Nokia, but Apple, Google, and Research in Motion are dominating in the Smartphone’s OS/app store area. Recent data shows that Smartphones will account for 16% of all cellphones this year, which suggests that there is more room for Samsung’s participation.

Currently, the Smartphone segment represents less than 5% of Samsung’s business, but it is the market’s fastest-growing and most profitable segment, therefore the company wants more participation in the growing field.

Key features of bada

According to the company, the new operating system will deliver simple, instinctive, and novel user experiences through its innovative visual design. It will have a next generation UI framework that features various new apps and user interfaces for different bada applications.

Service-oriented features: At present, the demand for service-based applications is growing in consumers. The new platform will support various service-oriented features to facilitate the expansion of connected applications. The company added that its developers can also employ various service features in the applications.

Samsung bada intends to use all the common experiences and functions across applications in the platform so that various extensible core functions like dialer, messaging, and address book can be freely use.

Samsung-Symbian divorce?

After the announcement of its own operating system, Samsung Electronics has been rumored to plan, removing Symbian from its future roadmap. It is reported that Mr. DonJoo Lee, Senior VP of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Division and Digital Media & Communications Business has also confirmed the development. However, Samsung said that it is an initial member of Symbian Foundation and continues to cooperate with Symbian Foundation and to satisfy different consumers’ needs, the company will continue its ‘multi-OS’ strategy.

Korean giant Samsung claims that 42 percent of phone users worldwide will pay to download applications. That’s ahead of the launch of its Bada platform.

Bada is Samsung’s “open” mobile platform and the firm said the survey showed that 54 percent of the people it surveyed will pay up to for each application downloaded.

The most popular applications, according to the survey, are travel and navigation applications, photography, work and shopping.

How so? Dr Hoosoo Lee, head of the media solutions center at Samsung said: “Our findings show the vast potential of the applications market and the huge untapped revenues, driven by high levels of consumer demand. We aim to make smartphone features accessible to everyone, so that developers can reach larger audiences and the variety and creativity of apps can be enjoyed by many.”

The survey threw up some interesting gender differences. Gaming apps are more popular with women than men. Women also like photography applications. Six out of 10 women use apps to enrich their family life.

Samsung surveyed 500 male and females of different ages for the survey.

SEONGNAM, South Korea – KT Corporation has sold over 60 000 Apple iPhone units, according to Digital East Asia. In a land where Samsung and LG are the major players, and where most mobile phones support mobile TV, the iPhone has sold relatively well over the last two weeks, despite sales numbers not approaching those of the iPhone in the US.

The number of iPhone units in the market is 1% of the total mobile market, and can be positively compared to the overall sm
fef
artphone market figures of Q3, in which 400 000 smartphones weresold. The network, whom holds exclusivity in the country, expects sales from 100 000 to 500 000.

The sales figures may not be overwhelming, but KT executives hold hope for Apple’s smartphones, according to a report: “Executives at KT believe that the introduction of the iPhone could be a turning point for smartphones in Korea”.

In a country where 90% of the population owns a mobile phone, Samsung and Pantech have a combined 90% marketshare. Both Samsung and LG have been aided by the government, whom imposed restrictions on foreign companies.

In other parts of Asia, namely China, the iPhone has failed to attract consumers, with reportedly only 5000 units sold by China Unicom – the third largest network in the country, with more than 125m GSM subscribers and 45m CDMA subscribers – and only five units sold in two weeks by the largest Chinese e-commerce website, Taobao.com.

Samsung at an event today provided some early feature details of its bada mobile platform ahead of its actual SDK release. Every phone will have a relatively high specification with a multi-touch wide VGA (roughly 800×480) screen as a minimum for its interface. They will also have to have at least 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi as part of the feature set.

The software will have its own interface but can also accept layers; the first bada phone from Samsung should run TouchWiz 3.0, an as-yet unreleased variant of its custom interface also found on Windows Mobile phones like the Omnia II. It should support extra features like fine-grained vibration control as well as face detection and general activity sensors. As an open design, it will give developers access down to the contact and phone services.

Samsung reiterated that the first phone should be available in the first half of 2010, with more expected later.

Bada faces a significant struggle ahead as it will have to compete not only with major competitors outside of Samsung like iPhone but also within Samsung’s own lineup. The company still expects to ship phones using Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile over the next few years and hasn’t said how many of its phones will use its in-house OS versus those of others.

Today Samsung held a launch event in London, England for their brand new Bada mobile operating system platform. If you want to know all the details of Samung Bada then you’re both in luck and out of luck. I would explain myself but Eric Zemen from Information Week has already done a pretty brilliant job:

To call today’s event a waste of time would be an understatement. Bada was first announced by Samsung last month. Bada is going to be Samsung’s new feature phone platform, and promises to deliver the smartphone experience to non-smartphone devices. Today’s audience hoped to learn more, as this was to be the official launch of the new mobile operating system. Only there was no launch.

Sure, lets of guys with fancy title got up and talk, but I didn’t learn anything new. Not only did I not learn anything new, Samsung didn’t have any demos, any phones, or even any screen shots of what the new OS will look like and how it performs. Instead, we were blasted with buzzword after buzzword after flowery statement after flowery statement.

Samsung shared nothing real. (OK, they did say that Bada will have a Flash-based UI, is compatible with C++, and will become the next generation of its TouchWiz user interface.) But that’s it.

After making a lot of promises, Samsung trotted out some of its committed developer partners. My favorite was the head of Twitter’s mobile business. He got up, introduced himself, and said “we’re excited about the opportunities that Bada presents” and then he left. Samsung flew him half way around the world for that?

Others, like Kelly Hodgins from BGR were willing to give the platform more of a break – but probably because they didn’t travel across the globe to hear the limited info:

Throw in some keywords like Flash control, web control and face detection while offering a 0,000 coffer for the Bada Developer Challenge and you’ve got everyone’s attention. The first Bada mobile phone will launch in the first half of 2010, presumably to coincide with the launch of Bada applications in the Samsung application store. Hopes are high for Bada with Samsung expecting to both launch several models of Bada-powered phones and expand the application store to 30 countries including France, Italy and the UK by the end of 2010.

Here is the full Press Release from today:

Samsung unveils new smartphone platform “bada” to the world

Samsung bada offers a powerful opportunity for developers, mobile operators, and consumers with a wider range of smartphone experiences

December 8th, 2009, London, United Kingdom – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today unveils its new smartphone platform, Sams
fef
ung bada. At this unveiling, Samsung showcases the bada SDK (Software Development Kit) for partners and presents the unique benefits and unprecedented opportunities that the bada platform will bring to developers, mobile operators and consumers.

Samsung bada is a driving force in accomplishing Samsung’s vision of a ‘smartphone for everyone.’ To achieve this vision, Samsung bada offers a feature-rich platform for enhanced mobile experiences for consumers, and a complete mobile ecosystem through a developer support program that both the application store and consumers will benefit from. Based on Samsung’s accumulated expertise in developing advanced mobile phones, the company will allow its users to enjoy ultimate mobile experience through superb features.

Dr Hosoo Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the Media Solution Center at Samsung Electronics said, “In providing Samsung bada, I believe that Samsung will become a true leader in the mobile industry; offering a wider range of smartphone choices for consumers.” He added, “At the same time, Samsung bada presents a powerful opportunity for developers to get their applications onto an unprecedented number of Samsung devices across the world“

Samsung bada, meaning Ocean in Korean, possesses the following key characteristics:

User-interactive

Based on Samsung’s signature TouchWiz User Interface, Samsung bada platform provides an easy, simple, and intuitive UI without compromising efficiency. To enhance creativity and user interactivity, Samsung bada provides flash control, web control, motion sensing, fine-tuned vibration control, and face detection. Also, it supports sensor-based, context-aware applications. By using various sensors such as accelerometers, tilt, weather, proximity, and activity sensors, application developers can easily implement context-aware interactive applications.

Service-oriented

Samsung bada differentiates its position by supporting various service-centric features such as social networking, device synchronization, content management, location-based services, and commerce services – all supported by back-end bada servers. These ground-breaking developer-friendly features support developers to implement various services without additional effort.

Open and configurable

Samsung bada enables developers to take full advantage of mobile device capabilities to create compelling applications with ease. Applications can use device functions to make phone calls, send messages, or access the contact list. Also, various service applications can share information such as personal profiles, social relations, schedules, or contents with a simple user confirmation in order to provide services with greater personal relevance and cooperative service extension. The flexibility of the bada platform makes it applicable to a wider range of devices than any other mobile operating system.

Attendees at today’s launch event will also be introduced to the new Samsung bada Developer Challenge. The Challenge is the first chance for developers to win a share of a US,700,000 prize fund, simply by using the features of the new bada platform to build a wide variety of applications for bada devices. The competition is one of the largest ever for developers of mobile software and is testament to Samsung’s commitment to the new bada platform.

Samsung is also set to announce a series of Developer Days to take place across the world during 2010. Open to all developers, the initial events will be held in Seoul, London and San Francisco, with more events following as the year progresses.

The event will also feature insights from current bada development partners including micro blogging service Twitter, movies and games rental outlet Blockbuster, Video and iconic games developers CAPCOM, EA Mobile, and Gameloft . Each partner outlined their vision for the future of mobile apps and how they believe that bada wi
978
ll play a key role in the advance of app services to a wider audience in years to come.

“Our heritage is games machines and arcade machines but we’re eagerly branching out to make the most of mobile,” said General Manager of Online Business Division, Yasuhiro Sumida from CAPCOM. “We recognise our customers aren’t all about games in their homes but want them when they’re out and about, in the palm of their hand. To help us make this move into mobile we want to make sure we are working with the right partner. bada is accessible, open to all and very easy to use.”

“Congratulations to Samsung on the launch of bada. It is great to see one of the world’s leading handset manufacturers embrace software and services on mobile devices so wholeheartedly and wish them all the best,” said Luca Pagano, Vice President, EMEA Publishing, EA Mobile. “The marriage of great games on the right devices is something we take very seriously at EA Mobile and we are excited to light up the upcoming handsets with our high quality games in 2010.”

“We are pleased to once again collaborate with Samsung and launch our games on the bada mobile platform,” said Michel Guillemot, chairman and CEO, Gameloft. “With nearly 100 million Gameloft games downloaded by Samsung users worldwide, it is quite clear that our games on these devices have made significant impact with consumers over the years.
